Scenario: You’re in an “all hands on deck” meeting. The speaker may or may not be saying something that applies to you; you can’t be certain since the slides are boring and you just can’t seem to focus on the words.
Default Option: Since you can’t focus anyways, you decide to turn off your camera and get some work done. Or perhaps, “half-listen” and send chats with colleagues about how pointless this meeting is.
A HMMM Option 1: DO you need to be in this meeting? Or could you get a recap from the meeting notes or a colleague that’s attending. If possible, leave. Or don’t accept in the first place.
A HMMM Option 2: Ok Yes, you do need to be there. Then I would suggest grabbing a physical pen and paper and draw. Draw out any words that catch you ear. Embellish borders around the paper. Stay in the meeting but have something to keep your hands occupied to help with your active listening. This is one of the things I train on during my 1 to 1 sessions on Using Visual for Work.
