Post 37: MEETING OBJECTIVES AND PLANNING/ATTENDING MEETINGS

Reflection questions for you:

  1. What rules are you following that are self-imposed?
  2. What would happen if you allowed yourself to wiggle that line?

When reading A CREATIVE ACT by Rick Rubin, the point he made about rules really stood out to me. I realized a self-imposed rule I have, is using markers to lead my trainings/workshops. But I’m glad I didn’t unintentionally impose this rule onto others.

The instructions are simple: “Something to write with and something to write on. Bonus if you use colors!”

This has left room for attendees to use pens, highlighters, colored pencils, and most recently (and my favorite), watercolors. I didn’t want restrictions on what utensils to use to stymie creativity; the whole point is to encourage and nurture that creativity!

So, I pose the reflections questions again, and I’ll add a third for leaders:

  1. What rules are you following that are self-imposed?
  2. What would happen if you allowed yourself to wiggle that line?
  3. Are there rules you can get rid of to let your people wiggle their lines?

If that is too broad of a prompt, consider these questions in the context of meetings you host and attend.
